Prior to that most of our backpacks were "frameless" and relied on a folded or coiled sleeping pad for support. I did my first three thru-hikes (AT, PCT, CDT) with frameless packs very similar to our current Zero backpack. Frameless backpacks are ok for super ultralight loads, but they start to get uncomfortable on the shoulders when they are pushed beyond about 20 lbs (9 kg). On a long hike, heavier food and water loads are inevitable.
