SLeigh Cleveland, left, and Peggy Noble died in the Ashburton Work and Income shootings on September 1, 2014. The injuries to two women killed in the Ashburton Work and Income shootings were "unsurvivable", a court has heard. Consultant forensic pathologist Dr Martin Sage told the High Court at Christchurch that Susan Leigh Cleveland probably had her right arm raised protecting her head when she was hit by the shotgun slug that killed her on September 1, 2014.Sage took off his jacket to show the jury how he believed the 55-year-old was positioned as she was shot three times in the Ashburton Work and Income office.

Russell John Tully is on trial in the High Court in Christchurch. Russell John Tully, 49, is on trial for the murders of Cleveland and Peggy Turuhira Noble, and the attempted murder of Lindy Louise Curtis and Kim Elizabeth Adams. He is also charged with setting a man trap – a steel wire stretched between two trees – and unlawful possession of two shotguns. The trial has been shown CCTV footage of the shootings several times, with part of the video showing the balaclava-clad gunman firing three shots at a target off-screen.Sage said he believed the first shot hit Cleveland's chest area with pellets but they had not penetrated. She was then evidently leaning forward with her right arm raised alongside the right side of her head when she was hit by a solid slug from the next shot. The slug entered under her right arm, crossed her chest and passed through her heart and diaphragm before lodging near her left flank where it was found during the post mortem examination. She was then hit by another shot with pellets in the collar area which had not caused any major vascular injuries.

The injury from the solid slug was "unequivocally unsurvivable", Sage told the trial's sixth day before Justice Cameron Mander and a jury.Sage also described the injuries to Noble, 67, who was shot in the chest as she worked at the office's reception desk.He said the blast had hit her chest at an angle "demolishing the aorta as it leaves the heart", and perforating two chambers of the heart, and a lung.An X-ray showed 158 shotgun pellets within the chest cavity. The injury was "unequivocably unsurvivable" and the victim would have collapsed and died more or less immediately.HANDLER: POLICE DOG'S 'EYES GOUGED'Earlier, the court heard the alleged Ashburton gunman tried to gouge a police dog's eyes and wrench its jaws open when the animal bit him.Constable Reuben William Whalley, a police dog handler who deployed with Armed Offenders' Squad members from Christchurch and Timaru, gave evidence about a police dog's capture of the alleged gunman in a macrocarpa hedge near Ashburton. The trial heard evidence by a farmer near Ashburton who had sighted a man in a paddock near Terrace Rd, near the Ashburton River, on the afternoon of the shootings.

The man had a backpack, and a bike over his shoulder. The farmer reported the sighting to the police.Whalley told of being sent to the area near Terrace Rd, and later Lake Hood, and then returning to the Terrace Rd area.He saw a bike hidden in a macrocarpa hedge. When he got police dog Luka out of the van, the dog indicated there was a person inside the 4-metre wide hedge. Whalley then called for assistance."We were in a very vulnerable position, out in the open," he told the court."We had no real cover at our location."When other officers arrived, he yelled a challenge. He called out: "Police dog handler. I have a dog. Come out now or the dog will be deployed and he will bite you."There was no response to the challenge so he then jumped the fence beside the hedge and told the dog to "rouse"."The dog then went forward and I heard screaming coming from the hedge," Whalley said.He asked the person to show himself. All he could see was a boot sticking out of the hedge so he dragged him out.
