Serving the community is a priority for the School of Health Sciences. Here are a few ways we achieve this goal: Addiction Studies students participate in community service learning projects including: Nikki's Fund; Boys' and Girls' club of Yankton; Vermillion High School SADD Program; The ADS students are also involved in community high school events and health fairs including those at Yankton High School and Rosebud High School. The faculty serve at state, regional, and national levels through leadership positions. Two faculty members are two of eight addiction professionals from around the nation who have been chosen as accreditors for the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission board. The ADS office participates in events such as: Vermillion Welcome Table; Vermillion School Supply Drive; Sharing Tree at Christmas. ADS senior majors have secured internships with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Washington DC. USD Officers of Coalition of Addiction Students and Professionals Pursuing Advocacy attend the Advocacy in Action Conference in Washington DC.

Dental Hygiene provides dental and dental hygiene services at reduced fees at clinics in Sioux Falls and Vermillion. Students also provide screenings, fluoride varnish and sealants in the school-based preventive dental program. Oral health education and promotion is provided at many community events such as health fairs, scrubs camps, festivals, ethnic celebrations, farmer’s markets, and other health-related activities. Health Sciences Major students provide services to many communities and events including: Ability Building Services, American Cancer Society, The Yankton Banquet, Boys and Girls Club, Dakota Gardens, Feeding South Dakota, Girls Inc, Girl Scouts of America, Good Samaritan Society, The Gospel Mission, Iowa Mission of Mercy, Komen Race for the Cure, Salvation Army, SD Achieve, SESDAC, Sioux City Gospel Mission, Special Olympics, Vermillion Food Pantry, Vermillion Weekend Backpack Program, and the Vermillion Welcome Table. Medical Laboratory Science students and faculty participate in the Community Health Fair in Vermillion.

The faculty participates in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science-South Dakota. Nursing faculty and students at all sites serve the state by participating in numerous community outreach events.  Some examples include providing influenza immunizations to the community and participating in community health fairs on health promotion and education.  Specific events have included the Sanford Health Fair in Vermillion, Vermillion Wacipi, Vermillion Farmer’s Market, Vermillion Welcome Table, Vermillion Backpack program,  Pierre Project Connect, Pierre Women in Science, Community service to the Cheyenne River Reservation Project, Rapid City Project WISE, Rapid City Hope Center Food and Supply Drive, Blood Drive, Rapid City Breast cancer Prevention Fundraiser, Rapid City Hospice House, Rapid City Mission Table, Watertown vision and hearing screening for the Watertown School District. Occupational Therapy provides chronic pain management services at Falls Community Clinic;

wheelchair distribution and positioning clinics in Guatemala; pediatric intervention services within Vermillion; work place assessments for USD employees; and screening and education at local health fairs. Other community events include the Vermillion Welcome Table, spring clean-up for community members in need, Adopt a Highway, and the Ronald McDonald House. Social Work serves the state and region through agency-based professional internships. The BSSW faculty serves the SD Division of Child Protection through membership on Systems of Care Steering committees and yearly training on Systems of Care.
