With magnificent views of the volcanoes right from the doorstep, the National Park hostel accommodation ranges from budget backpacker beds to private ensuite rooms. Other facilities include a fully equipped kitchen, BBQ area, internet access and a laundry and drying room which is especially useful after tackling the Tongariro Crossing or a hard day’s skiing at Mt Ruapehu. There is a friendly, social environment at the YHA National Park Backpackers which is partly due to the fact that the hostel has been built around a challenging 8 metre high indoor climbing wall! Open daily with 55 different climbs, gear hire and free instruction, you must give this climbing wall a try while staying at YHA National Park.  There is a bar/restaurant just next door and other amenities like ski hire, postal services and takeaways are a short walking distance from the National Park hostel. National Park Backpackers have their own bus to go to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, summer and winter, departing daily, weather depending.

In winter there are guided trips available. Their ski bus to Whakapapa ski field departs from the front door at 8.30 am, return 4 pm. Whanganui River trips, 1-5 days River Rafting on Tongariro River, half day White water kayaking on Whakapapa River, half day YHA National Park is built around an indoor climbing hall. There are great views of the 3 volcanoes right from the door step. Most rooms have ensuite bathrooms. We have 2 kitchens, a drying room and a challenging indoor climbing hall. Bus for transfers to Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Whakapapa village and ski field, several mountain bike trails and other local locations. Capacity and room types YHA National Park can cater for up to 96 people in 22 rooms. Room types available are: 2 x 10 bedded dorm rooms 2 x 8 bedded dorm rooms 2 x 6 share rooms with ensuite 1 x 5 share room with ensuite 2 x 4 share rooms with ensuite 2 x triple ensuite 2 x queen triple ensuite 7 x double and twin rooms with ensuite 2 x double and twin rooms with shared bathroom facilities About half of the rooms are on the ground floor and the others are upstairs.

All rooms have keys. The group kitchen seats 25-30 people the backpacker kitchen 30-40 people. Group members are accommodated in spacious 8 to 10 beded dorm rooms, single sex bathroom facilities are situated on the ground floor, Or in comfortable 4 – 6 share rooms with ensuite shower/ toilet. Each room has 1 double bed and 3 to 5 single bunk beds, a table and chair. All bedding is provided (duvets, sheets and pillows) and towels can be hired for $1 each. Supervisors and tour leaders can be accommodated in single, double or twin rooms with private or shared bathroom facilities. These rooms all include bed linen and towels. Continental breakfast can be served in our group kitchen upon request for $11 per person, needs to be booked in advance. It includes a choice of cereals, yogurt, fruit, toast and spreads (butter, jam, honey and peanut butter), tea, coffee and fruit juice. WiFi is $5 for 24 hours, internet kiosk $1 per 15 min. Group leaders will receive a 24 hours WiFi voucher free.

Bus transport with Tongariro Volcanic Adventures (in house bus) 5 buses are available, 22 – 47 seats, and one 12 seater van, all fitted with snow chains or 4WD Scheduled departure for Tongariro Alpine Crossing daily at 7.15 am, pick up at ~ 4 pm, other times on request, group rates are available. Bus to the Whakapapa village and ski field/ Mt Ruapehu crater hike: departs 8.30 am with 4 pm pick up, other times on request, please ask for group rates. Free guest pick up from Northern Explorer train and Intercity bus. Indoor Rock Climbing Hall Open daily 9am to 8pm, cost for groups $9 or $12 per person, depending age of climbers. The hall is 8 m high, has 30 top ropes, 55 different climbs in grades from 10 to 27, which suits beginners as well as advanced climbers. Climbers under 13 years old need to bring adults for belaying. A free booking service is provided for all land-based domestic travel and activities including Tongariro Alpine Crossing bus, Northern Explorer train, Interislander ferry, Intercity coach and local shuttle services.
