How do I get there? The Philmont Scout Ranch is over 200 miles to the closest airport which is either Albuquerque or Colorado Springs.

Most that go through Colorado fly through Denver as it is usually less expensive than Colorado Springs. The distance from Philmont to Denver International Airport is about 300 miles. Most groups flying into the southwest for a Philmont trip hire a tour operator like Blue Sky Adventures or a reputable bus company to provide transportation. It is very expensive and inefficient to rent vans for your group and set up your own trip. Due to the size of the back packs your group will have, it is nearly impossible to get your group and it’s gear in one vehicle, so two or more vehicles for even a small group of 10 or 12 are required. Not only is this inefficient, but it is not safe. Asking a volunteer to fly cross country and then drive nearly 300 miles in unfamiliar territory with a group of kids can be dangerous proposition. Spend a little extra money and let us handle your trip for you! How much does it cost to go to Philmont? A rough rule of thumb is that the actual Philmont fee is about one third of your overall budget.

The balance is spent on airfare, ground transportation, meals, tour and sightseeing expenses, crew gear and training. Total trip expenses for a typical group range from $1,500-$2,500 per person. Are your trips all inclusive? You never have to open your wallet unless you want a souvenir! Our price includes your tour guide, all meals, ground transportation, accommodations, event and wait staff gratuities, activities and entry fees. The only extra you need to consider is a tip for your tour guide. While it isn’t required, most groups do tip their tour guide as they feel the experience was so good that a gratuity is warranted. We recommend you use a travel agent who is familiar with group airline travel. There are lots of pitfalls when trying to book flights for groups so make sure you use someone who is familiar with airline industry practices. One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning a Philmont trip is using internet ticket prices as a guide for what they will pay for a group.

THIS IS A MISTAKE! As a group you will pay as much as $100 to $200 more than prices found on the internet which are for individual travelers only. If you don’t have a travel agent, we recommend Lisa Blomberg at Frosch Travel. Lisa has been working with our groups for over 10 years. She is also the proud mom of an Eagle Scout! We have served over 40,000 people since 2002 and our trips get better every year. Our team of bus drivers, tour guides, lodging partners, and food vendors are committed to providing you the best possible experience at a reasonable price. Every year, we see and hear about groups that have a disastrous Philmont experience because they tried to do this trip themselves. Flight delays, bus breakdowns, buses that don’t show up, hotels that are not scout friendly or in a bad area of town, unexpected expenses, and the list goes on.
