The final result is pretty memorable and has carved its own identity apart from the original Rolling Stone image. What was the impact when it came out? B+: People called me and were like, “Yo, they’re selling t-shirts of that RapPages cover in fuckin’ Harlem, dude.” I’m like, what the fuck?!? And that was when he was still alive. But it was like that at the time.DJ Nuts took [a photo recently] at a club of a dude who had took the photo off a website and made a t-shirt out of it. ’Cause the picture didn’t have type on it or anything. Yeah, it’s kind of a classic image. Brent Rollins: My preference usually is to come up with an original idea, an original image, instead of straight homage. But this was a parody that actually stands as its own thing. Other people have done a parody of this. A$AP Rocky did a parody, but it’s obviously based off the RapPages version, not the Rolling Stone version. It's like it echoed. B+: Somebody posted the A$AP Rocky rip of it and my response was that when you see it you think, they ripped the ODB, they didn’t rip the Janet.
So it goes from a parody to a pastiche. In a certain sense it had meaning. If you ask most people the song they know the most by ODB, it's the song he did with Mariah Carey, so this is like a joke. Like this is him sneakin' up on her too. But the original that it was based off of, in my opinion, was [a depiction of] Saint Sebastian. The notion, as it was explained to me, is that it’s kind of that moment when he dies. That moment of death. And so for somebody to flip it, to imitate the gesture — why else would you have your hands over your head, you know what im saying? It’s not really a natural position. If someone grabbed a person from behind, what you might imagine is that she would have her hands on top of his hands if it were a more natural sexual position. She wouldn’t naturally put her hands above her head. Classic painting type of thing, but this flips it. Flips the meaning of it. Janet Jackson vs Saint Sebastian by Guido Reni (c. 1616). B+: I seen him afterwards one time at this video shoot, man, and I was supposed to be taking stills.
Like it was a Ghostface video and he was looking directly at the sun. And it really freaked me out. I was like, “How is he doing that?” He was just standing there looking at the sun wide-eyed. You can really damage yourself doing that, you know? I was like thinking to myself, this the perfect photograph of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, like how can I photograph this shit? And twice — I’m standing behind him — I put my camera up and twice he said [in a slow drawl], “I see you photographer.” You’re looking a the sun, dog! How the fuck you see me over here? And it kind of made me appreciate him. For me, he’s like one of my favorite dudes. He just channeled… he brought a lot of Africa with him. He was a really special dude. When you think about the orishas and stuff like that. For me he’s definitely carrying that kind of spirit.Did you go see him at Glam Slam that time in L.A.? Brooklyn Zoo came out. I think Elektra Records brought him out for a showcase and they were gonna play.
I remember a lot of heads. It was deep backpack before it was even called “backpack.” People there to check him out. He had like 20 dudes from the Brooklyn Zoo with him. And everyone just wanted hear him do that song “Brooklyn Zoo” because it was the hottest shit at that time. He came out and started singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” pants down to just above his knees. I think his shirt was off. Just standing there in full John Travolta pose and he’s standing there singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and I was like, that’s it. You couldn’t take your eyes off him. It was in that kind of, you know, “whoa” [moment]. That was what was special about those times at RapPages is that we would really try to make something that would address the artists’ mission statements. And we would try to do something appropriate to that. Something that spoke to that [larger] image. Whether it was Kool G Rap, whether it was Goodie MOb emerging from the swamps of the gothic south.
