Chuck Westfall, technical advisor for Canon USA’s Professional Engineering and Solutions Division, said Canon is ready to compete in the crowded ENG camera market. “Our lenses have had a strong presence in the lens business for many years. We’ve taken the opportunity in the last three years to really put our feet in the water, so to speak, with these cameras,” says Westfall. “In order to do that, you need something compelling. The fact is that the feature levels are way up from what we had — it’s a 20x zoom lens in such a small package — and that gets us on stage. stm ranger 15 laptop backpackWe’re very competitive on the lens side, it has outstanding low light performance, now we’re adding wireless capabilities to the camera.”eberlestock destroyer backpack In 2010, Canon introduced the XF300 and XF305, the company’s first tapeless HD camcorder designed for ENG. boerboel backpack
A year later, they followed it up with the XF100, XF 105 and XA-10. At the time, a Canon spokesman said, “We’re the only manufacturer that makes all of the ingredients of a camcorder — the optics, the prisms and the filters, the sensors, the digital processing chips and, of course, the carcass, the ergonomics. By doing that we,’re able to bring a degree of optimization to a camcorder in terms of designing a lens and a sensor that really do work together and in terms of miniaturization” The new XA-25 and XA-20 will be marketed toward backpack journalists. The XA-20 doesn’t include the HS/SD-SDI connector to feed video directly to a microwave van, satellite uplink or other TV transmission system. “The XA-20 is well suited (for backpack journalists) because lot of those journalists really don’t need an SDI port,” says Westfall. “From that respect, these cameras are light and easy to carry and they produce such outstanding video quality — and they include some extra features, like the wireless capabilities to FTP back files.”
Canon will use the NAB Show to pitch broadcasters on the new camera lineup. Westfall says there are several broadcasters who are proponents of the XF100 and XF105 that may not want to switch to the new lineup, because they don’t offer the MPEG-2 compression and 4:2:2 color sampling offered by Canon’s XF Codec. “We hope to get (the XA-20 and XA-25) not only to our TV audience at those mid- to large-stations, but also to people doing independent documentary work.” Some additional specs on the new cameras: Both cameras will be available in June 2013. The XA20 will cost $2,200; the XA25 will cost $2,700. Canon XA and VIXIA Series AVCHD Camcorders February 18th, 2016, 08:21 AM XA20: what's a good bag? I searched a few forums to see what kind of bags are available for the Canon XA20 and though there were some old threads here (Looking for a small camera bag for XA20) I haven't found one that fits my needs. I'm looking for something that can take the whole camera, with a shotgun mic mounted, and has space left for a portable light, batteries, and cables.
The "official" bag (as in, recommended by Canon) is the Canon SC-2000, but it's been described as being a tight fit, and the mic has to come off. There are video reviews and pictures with an XA20 inside the bag. A larger model is the Canon Professional Gadget 1EG, but the inside length is reported at 35 cm. Given the camera is 24 cm, this bag feels like it could hold a camera and a half. I have not been able to find a video review or pictures to see how the XA20 fits into this bag. Any suggestions for an in-between camera bag, i.e., something around 30 cm long? Or if anyone is currently using the 1EG with the XA20, could you post a pic to see how it fits? February 18th, 2016, 09:48 AM Re: XA20: what's a good bag? The Canon bags are perfectly adequate, there's really nothing wrong with them, but there is one disadvatage: they are branded *Canon* which lets the whole world and all its potential thieves know how valuable the contents of said bag might be. For that reason, I really don't like carrying a camera company's branded bag around in public or while travelling.
I have a Canon-branded backpack for my photo gear and I really like it a lot. But, I don't take it out on the street. It isn't seen much out in public. That said, nothing at all wrong with the Canon gear. But you might consider these third-party options for the XA20: Pearstone Digital Video Camcorder Bag DVC777 B&H Photo Video -- probably larger than you need, but dividers are included so you can snug up the fit somewhat. Porta Brace CS-DV1U Mini-DV Camcorder Case CS-DV1R B&H Photo -- you can't go wrong with Porta-Brace, an industry standard. Might be just a bit bigger than required, but it has an internal camera cradle to insure a snug, secure fit. Tamrac 972 Micro-Camcorder Convertible Plus Shoulder Bag 97203 -- might be the perfect size if it's not too small. Can't beat the price, at the time I'm posting this it's a steal at $20. Tamrac is a famous old photo brand that has new owners and is undergoing quite the resurgence. Search DV Info Net |
