January: Team Backpack Journalists covered the Family Day event at Hampton Park for Charleston’s new incoming Mayor John Tecklenburg, and then watched as history was being made at City Hall. We watched as our beloved Mayor Joe Riley, who for 40 years served our city, quietly walked down Broad Street with his wife following his brief commentary after John Tecklenburg was sworn in. More pictures to come. Amidst these grounds of brick buildings and parking lots, sits a quiet corner built just for those who wish to come and reflect in quiet.A Backpack Journalist updated their cover photo.A Backpack Journalist added 7 new photos.DORN VA, Columbia, SC. For two days, our team backpack journalists from Charleston, SC, were honored to spend time with the staff and many of the veterans who live on site, or visited us to share their oral histories.

We quickly learned that this was not just a "hospital for veterans", we were amongst some of the finest health care, caring professionals who work (love to work) with veterans living in the state of SC. One of our interviewees was insistant that we talk to h...im about how well he was taken care of . Yes, we got that on film, and invited in his health care worker to share his comments. (And no, laughing, we did not pay him to say that.) DORN VA was prepared for our visit, and on Sunday morning, we filmed their staff placing US Flags along all of the driveways coming in. Nurse Ruth, a 39 year DORN VA employee and today over all of the nursing care, was with her husband placing the flags! We stood above the parking lot in front of the building where the US Flag was hung. The day before Gregory Electric staff had brought over a bucket truck to place the US FLAG on the side of one of the buildings facing the parking lot. This flag was in place to honor all those within the hospital as well as the 3000 or so bikers that were to arrive on Sunday, bringing Christmas to the Veterans.

Now to Sunday, leaving at 2 PM from Caroina Honda, close to 3000 bikers and several tractor trailer loads of Christmas GIfts, were to arrive at DORN VA. At Carolina Honda, we had lots of photos taken of the bikers arriving and the collection of the gifts being delivered. We positioned our 4 cameras from the gate where the bikers came in, to accross the tents where the veterans were sitting watching the bikers arrive down the streets, and then on top of the building facing the parking lot. We had drones flying overhead managed by a Columbia, SC volunteer. It was about an hour of bike arrivals, a great band playing with the 248th, Ft. Jackson, and only a few short welcoming speeches. All spoke to honoring our Veterans, our nations heroes and focused on bringing Christmas to the veterans at the DORN VA. Christmas arrived yesterday at the DORN VA, and we were so honored to be apart of this celebration of community spirit and giving. This event, Vets Christmas Charity Ride, happened as a result of the DORN VA staff of people who love serving our nation's veterans, and the people from the midlands of SC, lead by Carolina Honda and All South Credit Union, and All American Heating and the people from the SCNG and Ft. Jackson and Gregory Electric.

Our next documentary to set to release in early Spring, and the working title: "A celebration of community spirit at the DORN VA". A Backpack JournalistDay 1. We spent the day interviewing Veterans and a special group of DORN VA Staffers, from the Community Service personnel, to nursing staff, to social works and "Superman" - the head of logistics. We met a 39-year staffer - Nurse, who came to SC from Kansas and stayed at the DORN VA for 39 years and is head of Nursing Services (and a host of other services.) We sat with Veterans who came to share their stories, and by the end of the day, we felt we could feel and sense the arrival of the bike riders coming in from the Vets Christmas Charity Ride. We ourselves enjoyed bringing some gifts for the Veterans and hand made Christmas Cards. Tomorrow...our day begins at 8 am, as we cover the setting up of the grounds at the DORN VA. Old Glory is already up - on a building thanks to Gregory Electric! It was a blessed day...A Backpack JournalistTeam Backpack Journalists - will be at the DORN VA Columbia, SC for two days - covering an assignment.
