Well that tiny diamond patch on backpacks that you thought was there for decoration actually has a purpose after all.Marie Claire has brought our attention to the intent of that little diamond-shaped patch you’ll find on many Jansport backpacks, and as it turns out, it’s not a pencil holder or a secure place to hold your strings as you make friendship bracelets.Although, TBH, it works for those things too.The leather patch is called a “lash tab” or “pig snout,” and it’s original purpose was to hold extra gear on cords to be strung through the openings. You know, important stuff that you’d need access to  immediately and can’t be bothered to rummage through your backpack to find.

Things like a flashlight, extra shoes, a hat, a canteen (thirst can happen at any moment, you guys), a bandana, or a string of dental floss you might need later.You can even use the little patch to keep your earphones untangled, which we all know can definitely be a struggle.Is it worth spending the time hooking things onto that little patch and then off again when you need them? But that doesn’t make the intent of it any less cool or fun to know about. So that tiny, weirdly placed patch isn’t so useless after all. Gold winner Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya got a warm reception from the crowd in Rio on Sunday evening at Maracanã Stadium. But all eyes were on silver medalist Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia. The 26-year-old crossed the finish line in Sunday’s race by raising his arms and crossing his wrists above his head. He later explained it was a protest gesture to call attention to the Ethiopian government’s killing of his ethnic Oromo people. Lilesa did not repeat the gesture on the medal stand at Maracanã. But he looked visibly somber in accepting his medal. He told reporters earlier in the day that he risked being killed or imprisoned for such a protest and would consider defecting to another country.Rio’s closing ceremonies kicked off Sunday night with thumping rhythms, dazzling color and a parade of athletes as the first Olympics held in South America wound to a finish. Like a lot of things about these Games, the beginning didn’t look promising. Heavy winds and pounding rain early in the evening threatened a washout at the largely open-air Maracanã Stadium.

But the worst gales died down by the 8 p.m. start. And even as the rain continued, Rio launched into what it does best–throw a rocking good party. Tight budgets have left organizers operating on a shoestring. But it doesn’t much matter when the seats are thumping to artists such as DJ Dolores & Orchestra Santa Massa. Security was tight, and many seats remained empty–a hallmark of these Games. But that didn’t appear to damp the enthusiasm of the athlete delegations, who swayed and smiled and selfied their way across the stadium floor. Oh, and remember Alberto Santos Dumont? He’s the aviation pioneer that was featured in the opening ceremonies. Brazilians consider him–not the Wright Brothers–to be the father of flight. For the closing, they trotted him out again, boasting that Santos Dumont was the first man to wear a wristwatch. Time will tell how Rio 2016 stacks up with other Olympics, but the country’s spirits were high-flying on Sunday night.
