Gurkha Centurian (Double Perfecto) Cigars Gurkha Cigar Gift Pack With Knife Gurkha Class Regent Churchill - Box of 20 Gurkha Class Regent Gran Robusto - Box of 20 Items 1 to 12 of 70 total The Examiner No 5 £1325 Ghurka Cavalier II No. 97 leather duffel bag, £1,004 Holdall No. 101 kit bag, £265 Ghurka Cavalier II No. 97 duffel bag, £735 Ghurka luggage: carry-ons with a conscience Bill Prince discovers Ghurka's range of luggage at Fortnum & Mason, which combines impeccable craft with charitable endeavour British model John Pearson helms the latest campaign from Ghurka, the luggage-to-homeware brand that last week launched a UK store-in-store at London’s Fortnum & Mason – a fitting if coincidental tribute to the Anglophiliac bent of the American company’s founder, Marley Hodgson.Pursuing his fascination with all things Downton, in the early Seventies Hodgson had travelled to England to attend a house sale, the disposing of a large estate that included a large collection of leather goods pertaining to the owner’s long-time interest

On the day, the entire set went to the tannery that had provided the leather to make them. But Hodgson – hooked on the weirdly resilient qualities of the materials used – persuaded it to collaborate on a range of luggage beginning with a piece he dubbed No. 1 – a black backpack still in Gurkha’s archive. Although never put into production, the No. 1 begat a line of twill and leather pieces that today represent a cornerstone of what could be best described as utilities for intrepid travellers that, by combining New England with Olde England, has thrown up a surprisingly light yet utterly redoubtable collection of lifetime accessories. It’s perhaps no coincidence given the long-term fanbase the brand has accrued that the stand-out piece remains No. 2 (known as the Express, £1,395) a multi-faceted weekender that underlines the fortuitousness of Hodgson’s foray into traditional, indeed battle-hardened, production techniques that, under new ownership, continue to produce rugged, go-anywhere yet admirably house-trained luggage.

Each successive item has adhered to a strict numbering system, confirming how little has changed over the years in the Ghurka offering, and at the same time recognising the time served by each design. (And here I would put in a request for the reintroduction of another archive piece, No. 21, The Traveller, the perfect international sized carry-on soft-sided suitcase.)Today, customers in search of its monogrammed articles to team with their boat or plane must trade places in Ghurka’s own imagining with hardy commuters and easy-on-the-eye explorers such as Pearson’s JFK-like brand avatar sporting the brand's inimitable, weather-unbeaten (yet perfectly patina-able) pieces. But in contrast to several other brands offering canvas and leather luggage, Ghurka doesn’t offer a pre-distressed range, preferring time and the elements to do their own work. There are ranges of small leather goods including dopp bags and watch cases, but the stalwarts remain the weekend and day bags, each hand-crafted at Ghurka’s US-based workshops, or, for certain elements of the more technical, towable pieces, the Far East.

The vital ingredient, however, remains throughout: throwback bags that are nevertheless designed to navigate the world we live in today. And to mark the marriage of this venerable yet inarguably au courant concern and the fast-evolving retail space that is Fortnum’s on Piccadilly, Ghurka has produced a limited-edition collection distinguished by its namesake regiment’s green wool uniforms, from which 25 per cent of its sales will be donated to the Gurkha Welfare Trust. I should imagine significantly more will be raised by the sale at auction of a bespoke “field officer’s set” of its new line of campaign furniture – crafted in New York using American White Oak, German hide and English bridle leather – which further distinguishes Ghurka as a brand less about supplying the needs of the traveller, as inspiring the need to travel.Bill Prince is the deputy editor of British GQ + SAVE TO NOTEBOOK You Might also like The Luxury Visionaries 2016 Raf Simons for Kvadrat
