Welcome to Joetsu city! Joetsu city is located in Niigata prefecture, one of the prefectures facing Japan sea and lying 300km northwest from Tokyo. Joetsu region, to which our city belongs, is located in the southwest part of Niigata prefecture. Joetsu region consists of Joetsu city, Myoko city, and Itoigawa city. When using the new Hokuriku Shinkansen line from the Tokyo station, a two hour ride takes you to our station, Joetsu Myoko.

Since Joetsu city is facing the Japan sea and is close to high mountains, you can enjoy various contrastive seasons here. The monsoon from Siberia picks up the damp air over the Japan Sea, hits to the mountains and brings thick snow to Joetsu region in winter. Plants grow up with fresh water from the mountains and flowers like cherry blossoms bloom in spring. In summer, rice plants grow up moderately thanks to the sunshine and the fresh water, and make the scenery all green. The rice fields turn into golden yellow as the harvest season arrives in fall. Then the mountains are gradually tinged with red leaves and show the sign of another start of snow season. Rice farming is prosperous because of abundant slush from mountains. People in rural areas have gardens to grow vegetables. They can always enjoy fresh vegetables'direct from the fields'. Fishes are also delivered fresh to our tables. It is no use to say that we are rich in Sake brewed from high-quality rice and water with the help of cold winter.

In spring, 4,000 cherry trees bloom in Takada Park where Takada castle heritage is located. You can enjoy so-called "hanami" where people gather to view cherry blossoms and hold feasts. Hanami in Takada Park is regarded as one of the three most beautiful nighttime "hanami" events in Japan. In summer, beaches are crowded with people enjoying bathing and marine sports are popular, too. In fall, Echigo Kubikino 100 kilometers marathons, which is one of the most popular ultra marathons in Japan, is held every other year. People can enjoy running in beautiful countryside, hilly village and scenic coast line. Joetsu city is the origin of skiing in Japan. About a hundred years ago, an Austrian army mayor Theodor von Lerch introduced skiing to a division of former Japanese Army which stationed at Takada in Joetsu city for military purpose in snowy mountains. Today you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in snowy mountains. There are also hot springs in the mountains. Taking a bath in hot springs after skiing or snowboarding makes one of the best combinations in winter.

Of course, you can enjoy hot springs after climbing mountains, some of which are the best 100 mountains in Japan. Remains found in Joetsu city indicate that rice farming had been carried out in the ancient times. From the ancient times through the medieval times, there had been provincial government and provincial monastery here. This means that this city had been the center of Echigo state politics during those eras. In the Sengoku Period in the medieval times, Kenshin Uesugi, who was the strongest Japanese military commanders, had based in Kasugayama castle in the area. Even after several hundred years, he is still our hero and we have been succeeding his spirit of "Gi", or justice. Takada castle was established in early Edo period, and many rice fields were developed as encouraged by Takada domain. Those rice fields still form large countryside in this city today. Since Meiji period, or in the last hundred years, hydropower by abundant slush from mountains contributed to the development of chemical industry, and there are still big factories here.

You can enjoy the beautiful views throughout the four seasons: Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival attracting over one million people in spring, Lotus Festival in summer, colored leaves in fall, and blanket of snow in winter. Old townhouses still remain along Gangi-roof streets, which have been developed since Edo period by town people for the purpose of securing passages in winter season. These Gangi-roof streets are the longest in Japan and have a total length of 16 kilometers. Kasugayama castle was the residential castle of Kenshin Uesugi. The ruins of the castle are located at the peak of the Kasugayama Mountain from where you can look down on the vast Kubiki plain. These hot springs have their sources in Mt. Myoko. They are old and historic hot springs. Myoko Tourist Office http://www.myoko.tv/english/ These sites are recognized as global geoparks by the Global Geoparks Network. You can explore geological heritage sites here. Joetsu region is one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan.
