The weapons of destruction we used included 24-inch bolt cutters (easy to conceal, since they need only leverage and a firm grip to cut), a 10-inch hacksaw fitted with a metal-cutting blade, and an 18V angle grinder (a loud, spark-shooting cordless tool used in metalworking).
Most bike thieves use just one of these tools to steal your ride. We used all three. To see which locks kept up the best defense, click on the gallery below. To the contrary, our cameras are digital, our compasses and maps are in our phones or GPS, and our nighttime reading is on a tablet. Which means unless you have the heart of a gambler (much less the navigating skills of a scout), you need to take steps to protect your tech, with something like Pelican ProGear's U100 Urban Elite Backpack. Pelican is known for its line of ruggedized and waterproof hard cases that are used by professionals to protect everything from cameras to concert equipment. The company's latest, the U100, is a backpack that houses a waterproof, virtually indestructible hard internal case for laptops. In order to test out the U100's chops, we secured a laptop in its internal case and then jumped in some water – specifically, the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park.
We swam across the Madison and this very review was typed on the other side. As you might deduce, Pelican's claims of waterproofness are genuine and our laptop stayed as dry as the day it was manufactured. But we should also point out that the rest of the backpack – and the items inside – got thoroughly drenched. backpack sdu(Pelican doesn't imply the backpack itself is waterproof, but we thought it wise to point this out, anyway.)high sierra laptop backpack costco The U100 has a 16-liter capacity, and can fit a 15-inch laptop or 17-inch MacBook in the waterproof (and, it turns out, dust- and crush-proof, too) case. backpacking mauna loaIt also features four internal compartments, including an impact-resistant zippered pouch on the front for a tablet. hinano backpack
The built-in ballistic nylon rigid case (with an equalizer control to prevent it getting vacuum-locked) forms the base of the backpack, which explains the extra plush lumbar back panel, and the next expandable compartment builds out from there. backpack yarra valleyThe third compartment is a top-loading, fast-access, TSA-compliant compartment for liquids and the like. reebok wheeled backpack 18k srBehind the padded back is a hidden compartment that is great for keeping your passport, currency, or other valuables during a trip abroad. swissgear scansmart laptop backpack 17While we suspect it could actually last far longer, Pelican says the case is rated to survive for up to 30 minutes in 3.3 feet of water. The pack, it turns out, dries pretty quickly, especially if you pull the padding from the lumbar support.
So now, to swim back.... This week marks the autumnal equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator and moves southward. The nights are about to get longer and the days shorter. Fall has officially arrived. As you gear up for fall travel, peruse through our top recommendations in both form and function. In August 2008, TSA issued "checkpoint friendly" guidelines for travelers to pass through security without taking their laptops out of their bags. The type of bag that meets these guidelines provides an unobstructed view of the laptop so TSA agents can determine whether the computer looks like it's been tampered with. VIEW ALL PHOTOS IN GALLERY Samsonite's Checkmate II is a simple black checkpoint friendly laptop bag. The 15.4" bag weighs just under 4lbs and features a middle compartment big enough to fit a second laptop and a detachable shoulder strap. For a slightly more upscale aesthetic, Tumi's newest TSA friendly laptop bag is the Ekert Slim Laptop Brief ($195) from Tumi's T-Tech Data collection.
The ballistic nylon bag is lightweight with convenient interior pockets to keep all your gadgets in one place while one the move. If you are in the market for a laptop bag that will last longer than any of the electronics you put in it, Briggs and Riley's TSA friendly "Fuse" ($367) is a "suitcase meets laptop bag" with both a computer and garment section. The bag is made with strong, lightweight and abrasion resistant fabric and fits 17" laptop screens. We also like the easy "share" button on the Briggs & Riley website. For the fashion conscious, MobileEdge's "ScanFast" collection ($99) was designed by women for women with a lifetime warranty. The bags come in brown suede, green and pink with brown faux-leather exteriors and satin interiors. They include padded shoulder straps and fit up to 16" and 17" MacBook pros. For the eco-conscious, MobileEdge sells a set of sporty ScanFast 2.0 cases ($99) made entirely of corn (through an exclusive agreement with DuPont) instead of ballistic nylon.
The corn-based material requires 30% less energy to manufacture, reducing greenhouse emissions by 63% in comparison to ballistic nylon production. And for the just plain geeky, PCMag author Alan Henry "reviewed" the Quirky built Trek Support ($130), "a new backpack that's both a fully functional charging station for your laptop, phone, and other gadgets as well as a TSA compliant laptop bag that's safe to travel with and doesn't look out of place on the street." The Trek Support, made of durable, waterproof nylon, features a clamshell design with mesh pockets inside that can fit a 15" laptop and up to three other gadgets like an eReader, mp3 player, or camera. At the bottom of the bag is a rechargeable battery that connects to and charges your devices over USB. For stowing in the overhead of checking below, Tumi and Briggs & Riley offer top of the line suitcases for your traveling needs. Tumi's newest line, "Accent Your Alpha, "which will be available in October, features customizable luggage, iPad and netbook cases.
