Mt.Oyama (大山), also known as Mt.Amefuri (雨降山), stands at 1252MASL and is one of the more popular family oriented day-hikes in Kanagawa prefecture. Several routes are available in climbing this peak, and this post describes starting at the Yabitsu-toge or Yabitsu Pass (ヤビツ峠) and exiting at the Oyama Cable Car Station (大山ケーブル駅). The hike from Yabitsu Pass to the summit takes around 2 hours. Panoramic views of the adjacent Tanzawa mountain range can be spotted as you walk along the ridge before reaching an intersection. This intersection crosses path with the trail coming from the temple below where the cable car ends. The peak has lots of benches perfect for having lunch while enjoying the views. When coming down from the peak, backtrack to the intersection and take the left route headed for the Oyama Afuri Temple (大山阿夫利神社). You then have 3 options for descending. Option one is to take the easy way by riding the cable car all the way down to the foot of the mountain 5-10 minutes away from the bus stop.

If you do this, try getting the Tanzawa-Oyama Pass in any Odakyu Line station to save some cash! Options two and three involve hiking down via the Otoko/Man (男コース) or Onna/Woman (女コース) course. The Otoko trail involves a lot of stairs, and by a lot, I mean stairs all the way down to the foot of the mountain! The trail is shorter, albeit steeper and unforgiving to the knees. But on the other hand, the Onna trail is longer as it takes you to the mountain houses found around the foot of Mt.Oyama. Whichever path you take, both trails lead to the same exit point at the start of the cable car. There are shops lined up here where you can buy omiyage for your friends back in the city. At the end of the shopping road is where you’ll find the bus stop bound for Hadano Station. From Yokohama, take the Sotetsu Line Rapid bound for Ebina (海老名). This will cost you 310Yen for 34 minutes. Then in Ebina, take the Odakyu Line Express bound for Odawara and stop at Hadano station (秦野駅, 280Yen 21 minutes) where you can take a bus bound for Yabitsu Pass (30 minutes, 470Yen, Hadano Station to Yabitsu-touge Bus Schedule).

After hiking the mountain, take a bus at the Oyama Cable bus stop bound for Isehara station (伊勢原駅, 24 minutes, 300Yen, Oyama Cable to Isehara Station Bus Schedule) where you can take a train direct for Shinjuku or transfer in Ebina, then take the Sotetsu for Yokohama.
