It’s been out officially for just one day (unofficially, I saw it Thursday night), but it’s already predicted to beat the other movies opening this weekend (”London Has Fallen” and “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”) and outdoing the huge box office release of “Deadpool” (I’m a Marvel fan, too, and I loved “Deadpool”!

I did a post on that movie which you can read HERE). Personally, I’m already planning to see it again, so hopefully some of you get the chance to see it this weekend. Oh, and apparently, a lot of people loved the sloth scene as much as I did. In fact, to show just how much I (or we) love those awesome sloths, here’s a trailer featuring Flash the sloth, himself! In honor of the release, I’ve been hunting up a few cool facts about the movie, and some Easter eggs, too. I’ll try not to list any spoilers, but I’ll throw out that disclaimer, anyway. How many things can you spoil in an animated movie? No one dies in this movie..now that is a spoiler given Disney’s penchant for killing off characters and parental types in their animated films that probably traumatize the little ones for life. But, I’ll put the Easter eggs towards the end of this post. For research purposes, animators and creators made field trips to Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World, the San Diego Animal Park and real safaris in Africa.

They spent 18 months doing nothing but studying the animals. Nate Warner, director of cinematography for layout, was bitten by an ostrich, nipped by a zebra, and clawed by a cheetah, earning him the nickname: “Nate the Bait.” 2. There are about 64 primary species in “Zootopia” and as many as 400 different species in the movie (depending on the info source). Creators wanted the critters of Zootopia to be different from Disney animal characters in the past. That’s why the animals you’ll meet in this movie are anthropomorphic (walk on two feet) and bosses of modern technology. Additionally, they wear clothing from the real world… and some don’t wear anything at all. Another great part of the movie was the nudist colony. Awkward to the modest animals, but awesome just the same! Who knew elephants were so… flexible?3. In addition to researching movement, behavior, and habitats, animators considered the tiniest of details, down to a single strand of polar bear fur (Did you know: polar bear fur is actually clear and just reflects the white environment around it?).

You think you’re OCD (I know I am. I guess that’s kind of obvious!)? Filmmakers used advanced technology to trim the animals’ hair (as opposed to plucking individual strands one by one, like they did in “Bolt”) that fell beneath the clothing so that the outfits hung correctly. I found all kinds of fur facts about Zootopia and I feel it’s fair to say, someone at Disney has a serious fur fetish! Every animal in Zootopia has completely different fur based on the actual strands of fur for that animal in the real world. Animators also added a touch of realism to the animals by putting debris in their fur (sticks, straw, etc.). Yax the hippie Yak, for example. 4. This seems a bit silly to me, but as much as the Zootopia team wanted each character to be unique and fun, they also adhered to the idea that these animals had to reflect the traits of their real-life counterparts. Wildebeests that were initially conceptualized as Zootopia’s lawyers and business people got demoted to average citizens once field studies showed they’re not the brightest of bulbs.

I want to know what kind of “field study” tells you what kind of real-world job an animal would be good at? I mean, Wildebeests as lawyers? Um, “Can you recite the fifth amendment?” so we can decide if you should represent the psycho-otter in the padded cell in court? It’s not like they can fill out employment application. They don’t have thumbs!5. The role of Gazelle, the social-minded mega pop star of Zootopia is played by the equally social-minded mega pop star, Shakira, here in the real world. She sings,”Try Everything” from the film, which is an awesome song. You can watch that in the video below. A couple of the characters (Clawhauser and Bogo) have a phone app that allows them to be Shakira/Gazelle (sort of). Unfortunately, I couldn’t find that app in the Google play store… yet. But there are a couple of “Zootopia” apps available (I can’t attest to Apple equipment or their play store): “Fox Ninja Zootopia Slasher”, Mahjong Zootopia Christmas (a bit premature, but I’m not complaining!), and Guess Zootopia words.6.

Like many other Disney films, the city of Zootopia is based on an actual place (I did a previous post on many of the past Disney movies and their real-life inspirations which you can read HERE). Can you guess where Zootopia got it’s design? My first view of Zootopia (which was Judy’s first view), reminded me a lot of Corona, the kingdom from “Tangled”. Think about it… a central hub (Sleeping Beauty’s castle) with the different ‘lands’ radiating out from it, only the lands in this case are 6 geological zones: The cold Tundra Town, or the hot Sahara Square, the humid Rain Forest District, the suburbs of Bunny Burrows, etc.7. Assistant Mayor Bellweather (a sheep), has 6 unique outfits in the movie; all are made of wool, of course! That includes a stellar houndstooth dress, a blazer with a bell (in honor of her moniker), and an orange dress featuring a scissor pattern that represents shears. 8. Mayor Lionheart’s appearance was inspired by the king of Pride Rock, himself…

Mufasa from “The Lion King”. I could totally see that; if Mufasa wore three piece suits, that is.9. The world of Zootopia is so huge that there are cities that had to be cut out of the film, but they exist on the city’s map. The Meadowlands is all sheep. Outback Island is an Australian district. There is a nocturnal district with a city of caves. And there are probably other cities with reptiles and birds. I couldn’t find this alleged map to verify that, however.10. To make the actual city of Zootopia believable, the team developed a new technology called ‘keep alive’, where the world always has some level of movement in it; many things you might not notice until you’ve watched the film several times. Sometimes the action varies from making 30,000 tree leaves move, to mini-stories going on in the backgrounds of the story.11. Directors Bryon Howard and Rich Moore are in the movie as the two noisy neighbors who eavesdrop on Judy through the wall.12. Michael Giacchino composed the music for Zootopia.

While the Oscar-winning composer is behind incredible scores such as “The Incredibles”, “Up”, “Inside Out”, “Star Trek”, and TV shows like “Lost”, and even Disneyland’s attractions like Space Mountain, Zootopia marks the first time that he has collaborated on a Walt Disney Animation Studios project (I’m guessing the others were Pixar?)13. Do you see a bit of Disney’s “Robin Hood” when you look at Nick Wilde? There’s a reason for that. Head of Animation Renato dos Anjos loves that movie, and started his “Zootopia” journey with “Robin Hood” in mind.Disney animators had fun with the Easter eggs in “Zootopia”. The majority of them come from “Frozen”, but there are a few others, too. Here are a couple that I dug up:1. I mentioned this one yesterday. Aside from the verbal “Frozen” references (example: Chief Bogo tells the persistent Judy, “Life isn’t a cartoon musical where all your dreams come true, so let it go!”), Alan Tudyk voiced the haughty, conniving Duke of Weselton in “Frozen”, who is constantly irked by folks mispronouncing his homeland as “Weaselton.”

Now, in “Zootopia”, Tudyk voices an actual weasel named Duke Weaselton, who’s also a scheming little dude, but people mispronounce his name as Weselton and he corrects them with, “It’s WEASLEton!”Additionally, when Judy finds Duke Weaslton, he is hocking pirated DVDs; ones that spoof recent Disney films “Frozen”, “Wreck-It Ralph”, and “Big Hero 6″. 2. In the Tundra Town image (below), you can see an elephant on the left with two children. Those baby elephants are dressed as Elsa and Anna. It’s small and you’d almost have to see the movie in the theater or it might be to tiny to catch.3. The sloth, Priscilla at the DMV is voiced by Kristen Bell… This is extra appropriate since Kristen lives sloths. She had a very emotional, but adorable moment on the TV show Ellen a few years ago about meeting her first sloth. You can find that video HERE.4. Hiro Hamada’s Aunt Cass from “Big Hero 6″ must have had great success with her San Fransokyo-based LUCKY CAT CAFE.
