Tumblr user Swiked posted a picture of the dress on Wednesday and asked for help in determining whether it was white and gold or black and blue. "I see it as white and gold. My friend right here sees it as blue and black. I CANT HANDLE THIS," she writes. "If that's not gold my entire life has been a lie." The internet has been no help. People on social media, particularly Twitter, have made "white and gold" the top-trending topic as users argue over the color of the dress. (It's also trending with #thedress.) It's causing some users distress as the dress changes color when they look at it at different times. So what's going on here? Buzzfeed spoke to a post-production supervisor in Los Angeles who theorizes the picture was taken with a camera in poor lighting. That casts the whites in a blue tone and mutes the gold to a darker color.

The production supervisor says people who see blue and black are seeing the photo at face value. People who see gold and white are compensating to the photo's lighting and aesthetic. Nice theory, but it doesn't seem to hold water. There it appears to clearly be black and dark blue (well, at least to this reporter). Another theory relates to the retina in the eye. Apparently, if you see the dress as blue and black, then the "cones" in your retina are more high-functioning. If you're seeing white and gold, the "cones" in your retinas don't work as well in dim light. Basically the retina compensates with white and "additive color mixing," and thus they get white and gold. Even he was initially confused by the image: He saw it as white and gold, while a student saw it as black and blue. "Why is this happening? "This is one of the most fascinating color vision things I've seen in a long time."

Ultimately he decided the lighting played a big role, and that the photo probably was taken with bluish lighting, which makes the brain think the dress is actually white. But that doesn't explain why many still see blue and black.
