Before one would last us the entire year. And we only bought a new one because it was the thing to do for "back to school". Well, last year with the same use/load... it ripped at the seam where the top loop is when we still had a couple of months of school left. (Maybe certain teachers hang the backpacks while others don't. ???) AVOID hanging the backpack when possible. It's a good backpack & I'd still recommend it... I guess I'm just disappointed that ONE is no longer lasting a whole school year. Especially since money is so tight these days. (I still have the first two we bought - we use them to as swim bags since they're scuffed/show wear.) So I don't know if it's something with the stitching or materials have slightly changed... but we've had 2 now that haven't lasted as long as long as our very first ones.

I really didn't expect much, figured they'd tear quickly with heavy books, etc., in there, so I ordered two just in case they weren't available later when the first one did rip. But much to my surprise, they are much stronger than I expected and the vinyl is softer, not brittle so won't puncture so easily. I almost bought four to be sure he has a backpack the whole year but decided to wait until I got the first ones to see if that would be necessary, I don't think it will be. I really think one, or at least the two of them will last the whole school year. By the way, my son is 12 and in the 7th grade. So no HUGE text books yet....
