vamoose backpack

Vamoose's jacket and poncho are designed to quickly fold into a 3-liter backpackDesigners seem to love convertible, multifunctional backpacks, as evidenced by designs like the Glyde Gear Fly and WalkBag. They don't mind the occasional convertible jacket, either – just look at the weird-but-real JakPak. The Vamoose jacket is both. Similar to the Xip3, the jacket transforms into a backpack when not needed for rain and cold.Because it's built with name-brand eVent fabric, we'll think of the Vamoose as a waterproof-breathable jacket that moonlights as a day pack. The three-layer jacket is equipped with a large external pocket for carrying small items like sunglasses, water, sun block, snacks and cell phones. Within a few seconds, that pocket turns into a main backpack compartment when the jacket is folded into itself and reversed into a small, 3-liter rucksack. You have a jacket to carry the basics when it's cold, windy or rainy and a backpack for when fast-moving mountain weather changes the outlook to warm and sunny.

In addition to the main external pocket, the pack has strap pockets for additional small items and a bungee cord for strapping things in.As a jacket, the Vamoose appears to be a quality water/windproof design. The 750 g (26.4 oz) jacket features a built-in adjustable hood, taped seams, storm flaps and adjustable cuffs. It's cut extra long for added protection and is roomy enough to layer under.The Vamoose jacket isn't a bad idea for short hikes and outings where there's a chance of rain or cooling temperatures. Hikers would usually prepare by packing a water/windproof jacket into a separate backpack, so the Vamoose could eliminate the need for two separate pieces of kit while maintaining that level of preparation. Longer, more gear-intensive outings will require more space than the small Vamoose pack provides though.In addition to the jacket, Vamoose also offers a poncho. The poncho features the same eVent construction and backpack transformation as the jacket, but it can also be stretched into a flat sheet and used as a tarp, sunshade or gear cover.

The jacket keeps your dry and comfortable when it’s pouring rain and when storm passes, simply fold it into a backpack.
dftba backpackThis new level of packability is available thanks to Vamoose pocket technology, it turns the jacket into a rucksack easily that you can carry anywhere with you. It keeps you warm without making you soaking wet from your sweat, yes, it uses breathable fabric guys. One thing cool about this jacket is that when you transform it into a backpack, all exterior pockets remain on the outside so that you can use it even when it doesn’t rain. The good things first: In my opinion, the Vamoose is currently the best child carrier on the market for real hiking trips. The reasons for this are that it has a substantial amount of space for gear, and that it has a nearly bomb proof weather protection that works in any weather. We have heavily tested this out in day long downpours in high winds in the mountains, in blizzards, and in dust storms;

the weather protection this carrier's cover offers is extremely reliable. This is a mandatory function of any child carrier if you want to go further than an hour or so from the car park, but too many manufacturers don't provide the needed protection. So weather protection and storage space are fantastic with the Vamoose, and they put it at the top of the heap. Unfortunately, it does not excel as well in other areas. Most notably the harness on the adult side is of average quality at most. The Vamoose has the best harness of all Macpac carriers, but the harness is only of average quality and comfort nonetheless - not great if you are planning to do really long trips with your child. For trips up to two nights, you will probably be fine, but on trips that extend over a week or more where you carry more food and maybe a few extra items of gear, the whole thing becomes less than comfortable. Don't get me wrong, it is manageable and we have loaded the Vamoose up to 34 kilograms at the beginning of multi week trips without a problem, so while it is only rated to 20 kilograms and neither Macpac nor I would recommend exceeding this limit, it is plenty strong enough for heavier loads - it's just definitely not comfortable, even at 20 kilograms.

One main reason is that the hip belt is not actually attached properly to the carrier or frame in any way; it just sits in a horizontal tunnel of fabric, and can pivot up and down, so the carrier has no way of actually transferring the load onto the hip belt without the hip belt sagging behind your back and the hip belt rotating upwards - unless you tighten the hip belt really firmly, which doesn't help with comfort either. There are a few other bits and pieces that could be done better and that would be valuable, but they are no deal breakers; you can read more about that at http://trailbabies.net/main/2014/the-jet-pack-child-carrier/ if you want. Actually, not even the harness is a deal breaker in reality, because while it is not great, it still is good enough, and the large storage capacity and fantastic weather protection system more than make up for it. If you want to do real bush trips with your child, the Vamoose is probably the best carrier money can buy these days. It makes fantastic trips possible, and you won't regret spending the cash on an item that will dramatically extend your reach when you're out there.
