
I used worsted weight yarn with a 3.5mm hook. Just make sure you're using a smaller hook than the yarn label recommends, and you should be ok. Trust me, the star looks better without bits of fiberfill poking through ;) You don't have to join rounds, working in a spiral works just as well. I wrote this pattern when I was still very much new to crochet, and chose to join rounds because I thought it would make it easier to get the eyes to line up after. I've made a couple of stars recently without joining the rounds, and actually prefer it that way. I'm leaving the pattern unchanged though, so you can pick whichever method you want.
