I have used it on 2 deployments, where is worked well for a 72+ bag. It works well for that use.
I have also used it on several multi-day hikes; this is where I wish it had a few additional features. One - pouches for hydration bottles that are more easily accessible than the main compartment. Two - zippered pouches on the waist for access to often used items. I ended up overcoming both of these by customizing it a little with the use of the multitude of MOLLE. Since this bag is listed under "Military/Tactical" I did give it 5 stars since it worked perfectly in that setting. It is a little heavier than your other 65 liter bags, but with that you get a material that will withstand much more that those other bags that may be couple pounds lighter; I have no fear of tearing this bag or breaking a zipper, it is up for the challenge. Also, I currently own several Kelty tents and other gear, and their service has astounded me over the years (replacing broken poles on a 15+ year old 4-season tent), they definitely keep my business due to circumstances like that. I've owned this pack for more than 4 years now.
It's very similar to the US Marine Corps ILBE main pack with a couple differences. The removable lid with strap was a great idea for keeping essentials and emergency gear in, in the case of an emergency. The padding and construction was very impressive and well done. Overall a great pack for those looking for a long lasting, durable pack. I looked for months for the perfect 72 hour GO-Bag and had almost given up when I found this one. Hands down the finest pack I have ever seen. Kelty thought of everything. I love that I can take off the top bag and make the pack a better size for me but still have options. Included rain shield was a nice bonus and of course mo MOLLE is mo better. I am so glad I didn't settle for the other bags on the market.Very well laid out and great material cost alot but worth itFeaturing a women’s specific fit the Kyte 66 has been developed to cope with any-trail, any-season. In wet weather and heavy downpours the built in rain cover provides protection.
During hotter conditions the adjustable AirScape™ back panel keeps you well ventilated whilst offering the load support you require. The spacer mesh harness and hipbelt ensure a supportive and comfortable load carrying solution. Whilst the adjustable torso length means the backpack can be altered to fit you perfectly. For overnight trips attach larger items such as a sleeping pad on the lower external straps and put your sleeping bag in the base compartment with internal zip divider. Keep the rest of your gear neatly organised with the hipbelt and lid zipped pockets and access the main compartment easily with the single side vertical zippered access point. Need your hands free for a short scramble? Our unique Stow-on-the-Go™ system means no more ‘on and off’ to store your trekking poles, just simply pass the poles through the two elasticated loops for an easy hands-free solution. The single ice axe loop may prove useful in winter conditions and wet jackets can be stowed away from the rest of your gear via the front stretch pocket.
The dual side compression straps keep your load tight and under control. Our Kestrel pack is also compatible with both Hydraulics™ and Hydraulics™ LT Reservoirs so you can keep hydrated when hiking the trails. Once you’re all packed then pull in the reverse StraightJacket™ compression straps to tightly secure your gear and get ready to go. Durable, comfortable and technically advanced, these packs are ideal for multi-sport enthusiasts. Adjustable harness provides custom torso fit. *Not included in Kestrel 28. An integrated raincover protects your gear from foul weather. When the sun returns, it stows away in its own external pocket at the bottom of the pack. 3.5mm LightWire™ peripheral frame effectively transfers the load from harness to hip belt (not included on Kestrel 28l) Atilon framesheet spreads load across the entire backpanel to the peripheral frame Mesh covered ridged foam allows maximum ventilation while keeping the load close to the body
