Tools help you do things in the world. You can carry them with you in your backpack for ready use, or store them in a chest when not immediately needed. You can upgrade your tools at the Blacksmith for money and metal bars (or raw ore), with upgrades taking two days to complete. During the upgrade, you can't buy anything or ask Clint to break open geodes. Tools must go in ascending order of materials in order to upgrade. Copper tools can't be upgraded directly to iriduim, etc. Used to dig and till soil. After you have upgraded to the copper hoe, hold down left click to cycle between the different areas of effect. Hoes can also be used to dig up Artifact Spots seen around the world, to reveal hidden items. It is noteworthy that the hoe cannot till areas with floor/path tiles place over them. This also prevent objects placed on these floor/path tiles from being uprooted. Hence placing sprinklers over a floor/path tiles will aid in efficiently tilling soil when the season changes.

You can use the hoe to dig up dirt around town to get clay. In the Winter you can also get Winter Root and Snow Yams. Used mainly for breaking stones and furniture items (including floors and sprinklers). With each upgrade level, the number of hits required are reduced and bigger stones may become breakable. Using the pickaxe on an enemy will deal a small portion of damage to the monster, similarly to swing action tools. They can also be used to un-till soil tilled with a hoe. Used to chop down Trees for wood and sap and to gather Hardwood from a Large Stump or a Large Log. Similarly to swing action tools, it can damage the enemy by small damage. Every level upgrades, tree will take 2 less hits and 1 hit less for stump. Can also be used to harvest Giant Crops. Used to water crops. It can be refilled at any body of water, or at a well. Upgrading watering can changes what left click does; for example, hold down left click to increase areas of effect.

Watering larger areas cost the same water and stamina as if you were to water them manually, so this is recommended for large amounts of watering. Spending a day without watering your plants will delay or wither your crops. If it is raining, crops do not need to be watered. Tip: Using Retaining Soil may keep your crops watered for another day. Tip: Upgrading the watering can requires some planning, as it takes two days to upgrade, which means at least one full day without being able to water one's crops. The best times to upgrade the watering can are when it is not needed: starting the upgrade when the forecast predicts rain the next day, during winter when crops don't grow, or at the end of the season when crops will die anyway. Turn on hit detection to see the tool hit location box for mining/watering/etc. It doesn’t look great but it’s very useful when interacting with the world. There’s respawning coral there that nets some money on a semi-daily basis. 2000 gold at Pierre’s can upgrade your backpack from 12 to 24 slots. Pierre’s seeds are cheaper than Jojamart. Leave stumps when you cut down trees — they’ll grow back in 10 days for more wood/sap. You can’t grow crops in winter — UNLESS you have a greenhouse or get winter veggie seeds from the wiggly worms in the ground. Salmonberries are good for cheap, quick energy boosts. Save one of any star (silver/gold) item to show off in the fall for an event. Two sap makes one box of fertilizer for crops. Plant squares of the same crops (at least 9 total) for a chance at a fairy showing up to make them all mature overnight or to create a supercrop. Give residents gifts on their birthdays (the calendar outside Pierre’s has this). Rainy days water crops automatically and cause rare fish and mining stuff to pop up. After it rains there is new stuff on the beach.

Use the road to the left of your house to go to the mines, it’s faster. Coffee is a good speed booster. Use the watering can on your dog/cat bowl so they can drink. Spouses can water your crops for you! Grow corn at the start of summer — it’ll keep growing through the fall. Cherry bombs can explode rocks. Berries make for the most profitable crops in general. Look for wiggly worms on the ground and use the hoe on them for extra goodies. Donate items to the museum to eventually unlock the sewers. Make crab pots to get easy fishing items. Shift-click to buy stacks of five items. Completing the crafts bundle for the community center will unlock the greenhouse for year-round planting. The tooltip for the length of a plant’s growth doesn’t include the day you plant/water it. You can get free stuff from trash cans but don’t let residents see you rooting in there. Fix the minecart through the community center to get fast travel.
