These awards, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to US national security, broadly defined. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to US undergraduate students to study abroad;Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for US graduate students to study overseas. Learn more about Boren Awards. The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) offers scholarships for students attending CIEE-affiliated UCEAP programs in Botswana, Russia and Tanzania. It also offers a number of both academic merit and need-based scholarships. Freeman-ASIA provides financial support to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester, or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia. Eligible countries are Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, & Vietnam.

Award amounts vary from $3,000–7,000 depending on the length of study. The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with firsthand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. The Fund for Education Abroad provides general scholarships of up to $10,000 each, and three dedicated scholarships: the Hiliary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship, which awards up to $5,000 to a student demonstrating a love of Vietnam and other cultures, the Rainbow Scholarship for LGBT students studying abroad, and the Athletes Abroad scholarship for student-athletes (club, intramural, or varsity) studying abroad. The Los Angeles Council of Hostelling International USA awards an annual travel grant of $1,000 to support world exploration and experiential learning.

Applicants must be between 17 and 26 years of age and live in the greater Los Angeles area (including Santa Barbara and Ventura counties). The society’s Scholar Abroad program offers members one $5,000 scholarship each fall and spring semester and one $2,500 scholarship for the summer term. The Rotary Foundation supports students studying in any country where there are Rotary Clubs.Contact your local Rotary club to learn more about Rotary’s scholarship opportunities. STA Travel is partnering with the Foundation for Global Scholars to offer the Start the Adventure Scholarship. This biannual grant of $2,500 is awarded in August and December to applicants willing to be advocate for international education. There are two scholarships of $1,500 available for undergraduate students at an accredited Southern California institution of higher education actively pursuing an academic discipline leading to a career in international trade, business, law or related international field.
