I spent weeks pouring over picture references and deciding on materials (convincing myself I could do it!) until I finally took a deep breath and dove in.

Despite her eloquent style and cunningness, Edea wasn’t exactly my favorite of all Final Fantasy 8 characters. But I do adore a good challenge, so “long live the sorceress”. Materials Used: (if you click on a link, it will take you to the item) Paper Mache (see my recipe) Creative Paper Clay (this is a must!) Crayola Model Magic (white) Createx Airbrush Iridescent paints in Fuchsia and Violet Gold Spray paint and Acrylic paints Hard coat Mod podge (purple label) Dust Mask (for the glue and paint fumes) This was the most complex piece for obvious reasons. First, I made a head cast by wrapping plastic wrap around my head to protect it, and then layering strips of rigid wrap over it. (I placed the dried cast on my foam head for the picture, but I wrapped my actual head first.) I made the skeleton for the horns by shaping aluminum foil and layering them with paper mache. Click here to see my paper mache recipes. The green and gold “ear medallions” and fan were both made from 3mm craft foam.

The swirly shell-like piece and the piece that goes under the left ear was sculpted from Crayola model magic. Some of the beads were made from sculpey clay; others were store-bought and painted. The dome shaped visor that extends out beyond the back of the helmet was made with paper mache and rigid wrap strips. After gluing everything into place (with my E6000 and super-glue combo), I layered paper clay all over the helmet and horns. Paper clay is much lighter than other clays and doesn’t crack easily. It’s very easy to work with and non-toxic. If it starts drying out as you’re working with it, then just wet your hands to restore it’s pliability. Lots of sanding next! I then coated the entire helmet and horns with styro-spray resin to add extra durability and smoothness. Edea’s helmet is a mixture of blue, purple and pink, so I used a mixture iridescent airbrush paints to achieve that effect — mostly fuchsia (at the horn tips) and violet (everywhere else), although I did mix in a little transparent blue in with the violet to give the base more of a bluish-purple.

The other pieces were hand painted using regular acrylics. I lined the inside of the helmet with upholstery foam to keep it from slipping off my head — because it’s quite heavy! After painting, I secured the rest of the pieces on by using the super-glue, E600 combo and paper clay. Touched up the paint over the clay and sprayed a glass-effect clear coat all over. I altered a Butterick pattern (3554, dress C) and gave it a V-neck and fishtail. I used a purple spandex blend fabric (80% nylon, 20% spandex). Since Edea’s dress transitions from black to purple, I originally dipped the top half in black i-poly dye for about 40 minutes. But this didn’t give me the effect I needed at all, so I had to go back over it with black airbrush paint (airbrush paints are the only safe paints for spandex by-the-way). I sewed lots of black turkey feathers around the V-neck and cut slits in the back of the dress to accommodate the straps for my back piece. I also added velcro so that the holes could be closed while I wasn’t wearing the back fan.

The Back Piece (fan) After taking several measurements and comparing the size-proportion of Edea’s back fan, I finalized a design and cut it from foam board. I cut out 7 sets of rods with the pointed tips and 6 sets of the design that connects them (burning my fingers with the hot-knife in the process). I sandwiched the pieces in between 2 half-circles, as shown on the character. I used hot glue and paper clay to connect the respective pieces, and then coated the whole thing with styro-spray resin for a smoothing and durability. Note: When using styro spray, always hang the prop up on something because the mixture it will drip. I slipped wire through one of the center holes and hung the it up on a ladder to drip and dry. Cover your area with newspaper too. Spray paint everything gold then! Fearing that my back fan would clash with the horns on my helmet (because it nestled too closely against my back) I made a 3” thick pillow to give myself extra clearance.
