Nine years ago, the well-known Boulder-based trash, recycling and composting services company partnered with collaborative nonprofit Crayons to Calculators. Every year, Crayons to Calculators hosts a school-supply drive, hoping to provide students aged K-12 with basic school supplies they otherwise would not be able to afford. This year, Western Disposal and Crayons to Calculators celebrated a milestone. One million dollars have been raised by Western Disposal over their near decade-long journey of community service.
Through their annual Trash Bash auction and fundraising event, Western Disposal works with their vendors Shoco Oil, Autocar, and Transwest Truck and Trailer to raise funds for Crayons to Calculators. Over 10,000 children in the St. Vrain and Boulder Valley public schools have benefited from new school supplies, this year alone. Many of the students in the Boulder and St. Vrain school systems are on the federal lunch assistance program, meaning their parents cannot afford food, let alone new school supplies. So one can only imagine the relief they feel when Crayons to Calculators comes to the rescue. “My heart is filled with joy, truly, every time we see the backpacks come in, and we are passing them over to families,” Ryan Elementary school Principal Toby Bassof said. “For some families, the tears start, and they are hugging us because it’s one less thing they have to think about in terms of basic needs.” Single mother Brittany Weber-Villela says her children treat their backpacks stuffed with school supplies like Christmas presents.
Weber-Villela has six children — three with special needs — so finding time to work is nearly impossible. She, along with many other low-income families, breathe a little easier this holiday season thanks to the generous spirit and drive of Western Disposal. School is hard enough, let alone without the right academic tools, and for Western Disposal Owner and Founder Dan Souders, he wants to make sure no child has to start school unprepared.best diaper bags lucie's list “From day one, we have always been for the kids,” Souders says. backpack partner gezocht“It’s really important to us that kids get a good education; atrix backpack vacuum bagsthat everybody has a fair chance.”belkin swift backpack for 16 laptop
Bryce Isaacson, vice president of sales and marketing for Western Disposal says, “The Crayons to Calculators program meshes well with our values of helping children, and especially disadvantaged children. It’s very rewarding to watch the growth of this vital program and how we are helping more families every year — from 1,500 backpacks donated in 2007 to 10,500 in 2016. Our goal is to see this program continue to grow. We are also very thankful to our partners, Autocar, ShoCo Oil and Transwest Truck and Trailer, who have been indispensable in helping in this important effort.” Check out the video below to hear more about Western Disposal’s wonderful mission:Welcome to this year's Gift Guide, a piling-high of our most loved items from 2014 and beyond.
