How To Get a Great Pack Fit SCHOOL DAYS, EUROPE BOUND, CLIMBING EVEREST OR SOMETHING IN-BETWEEN? The experts at Adventure 16 can help you choose a pack that fits great while carrying all your stuff. The following advice will help with fitting multi-day backpacks, but any good pack fit starts at Adventure 16. A quality pack intended for backpacking will probably come in different torso sizes. Adventure 16 staff will use a measuring device to find the distance between the Iliac Crest on the hips and the C7 Vertebrae. THE HIP BELT AND SHOULDER HARNESS Some packs have multiple sizes of hip belts and shoulder harnesses to accommodate different body shapes. A properly fitted hip belt rides centered over the hipbones and is cinched snug to carry the bulk of the pack’s weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened. A properly fittted shoulder harness should start on your back about 2” below the C7, wrap evenly over the shoulders, and end 2 to 3 inches beneath the armpit.

Now, put in 20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight, put the pack on, then snug down the hip belt and harness. Position the sternum strap about 2” below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle. A GOOD FIT = A GOOD TIME! In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. A properly fit pack can be the key to a many good times in the outdoors.
